Pescadero – Old Haul Road

Pescadero Park is mainly single track trails, but there is an old logging road (Old Haul Road) that cuts across the park that is a wide soft surface path that provides a nice break from the focus required on the twisty/rooty singles. A thick second growth redwood forest grows along the entire 5+ mile route from Memorial County Park (Hoffman Creek Parking) to Portola Redwoods State Park. This forest was probably depressing for many years, but the scars of the logging era are healing and the forest has become pleasant. The grade is easy gaining only a few hundred feet over the course of the road with some small ups and downs in the beginning. The trail parallels Pescadero Creek, but the stream is not seen along the way. The environment here is very damp in the shadow of Butano Ridge so it’s no wonder that redwoods grow like weeds in this area. On this day, we parked at Hoffman Creek and did an out-and-back run up the road.
