On Saturday I participated in the Ridge Trail Service Day sponsored by REI to celebrate the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council’s 20th anniversary. There were 11 locations around the Bay in which over 400 volunteers helped improve and maintain the trails. I volunteered on Sweeney Ridge (Golden Gate National Recreation Area) in San Mateo county, with the National Park Service trail crews leading the trail work. It was a gorgeous mid-November day with record high temperatures and I was told that the calm and warm conditions were an anomaly for this location, which is usually windy and foggy. Our project entailed cutting back brush and building water bars along a nice 1.5 mile stretch of single track trail atop Sweeney Ridge known as the Horse Trail. The views were gorgeous and I snapped a few photos after the work was complete and we were waiting for the burritos to arrive. See complete entry with more photos here.
