Along with Matterhorn Peak in Northeast Yosemite, I plan on climbing Mount Shasta this May. I will be bringing along some newbies so I intend on doing one of the easier routes from the Bunny Flat Trailhead, probably the standard – Avalanche Gulch. As you can see from the picture below, the route looks like one large snowfield in the winter/spring months. I hear late May is an idyllic time to climb Shasta because it is still snow covered, but still accessible and not too cold. By mid-summer, the mountain essentially turns into a rubble pile. It should be a fun time. Check out the Mount Shasta Climber’s Guide for great info on climbing Shasta. Also, for current conditions, see the US Forest Service Climbing Advisory.
Exercise: Yesterday I had another good Oak Creek run (48 min) and today was a great pump at Arrillaga gym. I worked up to 10 reps of 155 on bench and did cable cross-overs and some tricep exercises.
