I never heard any stories, it must’ve been a very tough time in winter for a couple of Bay Area boys just out of high school. Dad did makes jokes about eating Blackbird Pie. and finding wild honey, but according to him, it was ‘the old Sourdough’ who lived nearby and kept a cow, who got them through the winters. What marvelous mountains they must’ve looked upon. My uncle loved it so much he retired early and built a cabin in Hawkinsville. He died there in his late 60’s. Thanks so much for this post!
